Not Recruiting 2022
St Peter’s Eaton Square
Pastoral Assistant
St Peter's are not recruiting for 2022
We are a large, friendly and inclusive church in central London and we worship in the Liberal Catholic tradition. Our diverse and international congregation come from a wide area, attracted by the distinctive worship and community at St Peter’s. Our parish around the church is teeming with life - it stretches from the middle of St James’s Park almost to Sloane Square and includes Victoria Station, embassies, offices, theatres and schools, Westminster City Council and the Ministry of Justice, the Guards’ Barracks and (geographically) Buckingham Palace, as well as a great variety of housing. Economically the parish is very diverse, with real hardship and considerable homelessness around Victoria, and great affluence in the northern part of the parish.
We are known for the superb choral music at our Sunday Sung Eucharist (attended on average by by about 40-50 people) and our popular Family Eucharist (with around 150 people). We are a popular venue for many other events including concerts, BBC broadcasts, embassy events and recitals. Children are involved in all our worship and we have a successful Youth Group and thriving Toddler’s Group.
We are a church which rose from the ashes of a devastating fire more than twenty years ago to provide a wonderful oasis of calm throughout the week for those who live and work around Victoria. We have a midday Eucharist every day and people come in to pray. The Grade 2 church was built in 1827 and extended later in the 19th century. After the fire it was restored to its Georgian proportions and remodelled for contemporary worship, and the rebuilding of the church interior provided us with office spaces, accommodation and a large Parish Hall. The rooms are extensively used by charities and other organisations, including AA who hold 14 meetings here each week.
We are a vibrant community of church, school and parish, a busy congregation kept young by our outstanding St Peter’s Church of England Primary School. The school makes good use of the church for services, assemblies, plays and events. The clergy and Pastoral Assistant visit the school frequently and are well known to parents, staff and governors. Clergy regularly take assemblies at Westminster City boys school, which is in the heart of our parish, and Grey Coat Hospital girls’ school too. We have some weddings and funerals, a steady stream of baptisms each year and a strong group of adults and children preparing for confirmation.
We are committed to creating disciples of Christ and effectively transforming God’s world. We have study groups throughout the year and especially in Advent and Lent, and are constantly seeking new ways to help busy people to grow in faith. We seek to engage with our community and our world through work with the homeless, the Welcome Box visiting scheme for refugees, social events in support of chosen charities and above all by supporting each member of the church in their daily lives.
We have a full-time Vicar, Revd Ralph Williamson, a full-time Assistant Priest, Revd Julie Khovacs, and several retired clergy who take services here too. We employ a Verger, Administrator, Book Keeper, Groundsman and Director of Music. The Clergy, Verger and Director of Music live on site.
